The OE pressure regulator valve design prevents adequate cooler flow at low RPM and high pressure/demand conditions, which can create overheat complaints. Additionally, in '99-later vehicles, the factory EPC pressure was set high at idle, resulting in engine surge conditions.

The actuator feed limit (AFL) valve in GM 4L80-E units has a large reaction area and is greatly affected by side loading, which wears the valve body bore. The EPC solenoid oscillates the torque signal and AFL oil, which increases valve action and accelerates wear.
As bore wear increases, oil pressure is reduced to the shift solenoids, which causes solenoid and ratio codes. The same AFL oil loss results in lower line pressure.

The plastic retention tabs that hold the wiring harness connector in place are easily broken. Once broken, the connector may push into the case.
Correction:
This metal bracket positively supports the connector and prevents it from pushing into the case even if the plastic retention tabs are broken.
NOTE: The 4L80-E unit uses two different wiring harness connector styles. The early style has exposed terminals and a red rubber gasket. The late style has a gray plastic enclosure surrounding the terminals. The Sonnax 4L80-E bracket 34998-01K works only with the late style connector.

GM 4L80-E and 4L85-E units may display no converter lockup or codes 68, 39, 1870 or P0741. Imbalance of torque converter clutch apply oil through the front stator support bushing contributes to this complaint. A journal clearance of .002" or more will generate sufficient leakage to cause lockup clutch slippage, causing the transmission to stay in third gear. Sonnax front stator support bushing 34016-W is designed to reduce leakage by minimizing journal clearance and also increasing journal length.
NOTE: Due to stator shaft variations, in some cases it may be necessary to hone the bushing I.D. slightly for proper fit. See instructions for details.

- The OE case bushing in vehicles with a THM-400 or 4L80-E transmission tends to walk out of the housing bore. This allows the bushing to wander into the extension housing, leaves the output shaft unsupported, and may ruin the governor gear and cause case damage. Sonnax bushing 34006-SP is specially designed to remain in the case bore. High-quality bearing bronze Flange on the transmission case side prevents bushing from pushing completely through the bore Flange accurately locates and helps retain the selective washer Machined oil grooves allow for a supply of lubricating oil to enter the extension housing as well as the transmission case. Note The housing bore should measure between 2.1285"/2.1295" in diameter for an ideal fit. When damage to the case is so severe that bore diameter is larger than 2.129", use Sonnax oversized case bushing 34006-OS. See instructions for details. A pump that has been resurfaced or accumulated shaft spline wear creates excessive endplay of the forward and direct drums. This reduces sealing ring, clutch, bearing, and thrust washer life. Having the ability to shim both the lower unit sun gear with Sonnax shim 34500-Z on 96 and earlier units and washer 34301-078 or 34301-094 on all units addresses these problems.
- Washer 34301-078 (.015" oversized) and 34301-094 (.030" oversized) take up the play between the forward clutch hub and the direct clutch housing, allowing front unit endplay to be reduced.
- Washers also stabilize the direct drum, reducing delayed reverse and improving 2-3 clutch circuit.
- Allows salvage of valuable hard parts.

1996 and 1995 transmission cases have neutral safety switch mounting holes but do not have the top mount shifter bracket holes. Sonnax offers a pan-mount bracket, 34913-01, that allows installation of 1994-95 transmissions or cases into 1996-97 vehicle that originally had case mounted shifter brackets. Additionally, if a late case has damaged or broken top mount bosses, the Sonnax bracket can be used as an alternative to correctly mount the shifter cable and allow reuse of the case.
