1995 to 2015 General Motors vehicles equipped with a 4L60E, 4L65E and 4L70E SERTA (Service Replacement Transmission Assembly) remanufactured transmission often come in with complaints of TCC slip or shudder, code P1870 or P0894 and harsh 1-2 shift.
The torque converter clutch regulator valve bore is very prone to wear causing the TCC slip complaints and related code. The TCC slip code leads to the harsh 1-2 upshift as the ECM recognized the TCC slip and commands high line pressure to avoid further TCC slippage and damage. For that reason, GM remanufactured SERTA transmissions usually have valve bodies that have been machined to allow the use of a larger .472” diameter TCC regulator and isolator valve. Over time those wear out the bore the same way the originally valve did, again leading to the same complaints.
Features and benefits:
This TransGo 4L6-ISO-3 kit features a drop-in USA-made hardened steel, oversized patented isolator valve. The redesign valve restores the hydraulic integrity of the circuit by utilizing previously unused and therefore unworn areas of the bore. In addition, it can be used without the included spring to work in vehicles with active fuel management (AFM). Lastly, this kit includes enough parts to fix three transmissions.

- 1993 to 2015 General Motors vehicles equipped with the 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E and 5L40E automatic transmissions over time wear out the line pressure regulator (PR) valve bore. As a result, in cases where the wear is most prevalent at the balance end of the valve, the pressure will be unstable. Moreover, if the wear is severe enough, it can result in unregulated high line pressure. On the other hand, in those cases where the wear is most prevalent at the spring end of the valve, the leak in that area would cause low line pressure. For the same reason, the symptoms will vary as well, ranging from harsh shifts, soft shifts, burnt frictions, overheating, to converter clutch failure. This drop-in precision USA-made steel valve is design to provide full-time line-to-lube, as well as restoring the hydraulic integrity of the circuit without the need to machine the bore. It also features longer spool lands allowing the valve to operate in non-worn portion of the bore. In addition, the longer lands distribute load over a greater surface area for increased durability. Note transmission removal is required only if unit has ISS “Input Speed Sensor” which started 2006-2007 and up. The TV cable synchronizes engine throttle movement with TV plunger movement. If the cable is not readjusted to ensure proper line rise, the unit may return quickly with soft shifts and a burned 3-4 clutch or band. Sonnax has designed a throttle valve link 77872-01 that is shorter than the OE, so that the installer must readjust the TV cable.

Oversized Throttle Valve
A low throttle boost condition is a common complaint in vehicles with a 700-R4 transmission. This loss of throttle boost oil creates poor line rise and accelerates 3-4 clutch and band failure. In late-model transmissions, the hardened steel throttle valve continuously oscillates in the cast iron valve body bore and eventually wears the three bore diameters. This wear allows throttle valve feed oil to leak past the valve spool and exhaust, resulting in a low throttle boost condition. This excessive leakage can be eliminated by installing the oversized Sonnax replacement throttle valve 77968.

The bore plug in 4L60-E units is held loosely in place with a coiled spring pin, allowing the opposing spring and oil pressure forces to stroke it within the bore. This constant oscillation causes the plug to wear and allows PR oil at the low overrun valve and 3-4 clutch oil at the 3-2 downshift valve to exhaust at the abuse valves. This excessive oil loss can result in delayed apply of the low/reverse clutch and a tie-up of the 3-4 clutch and 2-4 band.
This plug is used in two locations in the valve body: to separate the forward abuse and low overrun valves, and to separate the reverse abuse and 3-2 downshift valves.

Reverse Boost Valve Kit
Part No. K77898Vehicles with GM 200-4R and 4L60 transmissions often have problems with poor Reverse boost or upshifts in manual low. These are generally caused by a worn Reverse boost valve sleeve or wear at the pump body. Sonnax offers a larger ratio (.283") Reverse boost valve kit K77898 to restore the hydraulic integrity of the assembly.
Due to the differences in the thermal expansion rate of steel and aluminum when the transmission approaches operating temperature, the sleeve has been allowed excessive clearance and scrubs the bore.

Plate ConcernThe valve body separator plate in late model 4L65/4L70 now has non-removable bonded gaskets.
Hydramatic has also added flat solenoid screens.
In the past there were only two screens.There is now a third screen by the shift
solenoids.
These screens are not serviceable as they are bonded with the gasket.
GM had an issue with debris (usually case aluminum flashing) getting to the shift solenoids, causing P0756 shift solenoid “B” performance.
This concern was happening on vehicles with less than 5,000 miles on them, and still under warranty.Precision International has released a separator plate to fit all models of 4L65/4L70.
Look for this separator plate in our newly released KP33900N and KP33900NX overhaul kits.

- Heavy Duty 3-4 Clutch Backing Plate Kit Part No. 74140-01K Requires ‘91-later 3-4 apply ring stamped with number “7”, measuring 3.671–3.682" in height. A thin, weak backing plate is the leading cause of 3-4 clutch distortion and burnup – a pervasive problem in listed GM transmissions. The original GM 4L60, 4L60-E, 4L65-E, 4L70-E rear stator bushing comes in narrow and wide versions in both common bronze and harder aluminum type materials. All versions commonly fail or wear out prematurely. Available aftermarket replacements typically have a poor quality fit and are also known to wear.
For maximum durability Sonnax offers rear stator support bushing 77002BT-01, a better fitting and extremely wear-resistant, PTFE-lined bushing to stop future wear in its tracks.
The Sonnax bushing is the best option for supporting the 20 lb. input housing and for improving the reliability of these common units.

In 200-4R applications, this kit can only be used in the 3-4 accumulator location.
In GM 200-4R, 4L60 and 4L60-series units it is common to have poor shift quality, burnt bands or clutches due to accumulator piston wear. Repeated reciprocation of the accumulator piston causes wear at the piston pin bore interface. After this wear reaches a critical point, fluid loss through the piston pin bore cannot be compensated due to lack of pump volume. In addition, the piston can get cocked and gall the accumulator bore due to the pin bore wear or the spring bottoming out. To prevent these conditions in the 1-2 or 3-4 accumulator bores, Sonnax offers pinless accumulator piston kit 77998-03K.
Symptoms: - Burnt clutches & bands

Cause:
Wear at the piston pin bore due to repeated reciprocation.
Correction:
The Sonnax patented pinless design with dual seals stabilizes the piston in the bore and provides improved sealing characteristics. Use of the Sonnax part eliminates the need for the pins.

A burnt band on the GM 4L60, 200-4R or 325-4L transmission can be created by accumulator cross leaks. A driveability complaint of 2nd gear starts or 2-3 bind-up can result from excessive piston wear. These complaints can be caused by oil cross leakage between the piston and pin in the 1-2 and 3-4 accumulators. This is due to the constant oscillating motion of the aluminum accumulator pistons on the steel pin.Band apply pressure is simultaneously sent to the accumulators and band.
The problem occurs when accumulator control oil and band apply circuits cross leak. Accumulator control oil will bleed into 2nd apply or 4th apply and drag the band/clutch due to imbalanced oil circuits. Ream the bore and install Sonnax oversized accumulator pin and reamer kit 77999 to resolve these problems.

A common condition in 4L60-E transmissions is a burned forward clutch or delayed engagement. A worn forward accumulator piston pin bore is frequently the source of this condition. The aluminum piston continuously oscillates on a hardened steel pin, which can cause wear resulting in forward clutch oil exhausting. This oil loss reduces accumulator action and decreases the forward clutch apply pressure. The replacement oversized accumulator pin 77754-01K eliminates this problem.

TV Cable Corrector Kit
Part No. AS1-01KIn most GM and Ford transmissions with cables, including GM TH200, 200-4R, TH200C, 4L60 (700-R4) and Ford AOD, AXOD, the throttle valve cable pulls out of adjustment at wide-open throttle. This is typically caused by inaccurate geometry of the throttle shaft lever. There should be a specific degree of movement of the attachment element pivot point between closed and wide open throttle. There also should be a specific distance between the pivot points of the attachment element and the throttle shaft lever. When either of these two distances are greater than the spec, the TV cable will be pulled out of adjustment.

It is common for one of the three plastic retention tabs to break on the wiring harness case pass-through connector. This allows the connector to be pushed into the case when connecting the external harness. Not only does this require extra labor to fix, it also requires a new wiring harness. Sonnax has now developed two wiring harness connector brackets to retain the internal harness connector even though the retention tabs may be broken: 77980-01K for the 4L60-E, and 34998-01K for 4L80-E units with late-style gray connectors only.

They have been trying, with limited success, since the GM 4L60 (700-R4) and 4L60-E series transmissions were introduced. Inadequate metering of 2nd gear band servo release oil causes 3-4 clutch failure. The 3-4 clutch and 2nd gear band are not properly synchronized. Sonnax servo release check valve kit 77701-076 is a unique solution that combines an orifice with a ball check valve to resolve these problems.

1996 and 1995 transmission cases have neutral safety switch mounting holes but do not have the top mount shifter bracket holes. Sonnax offers a pan-mount bracket, 34913-01, that allows installation of 1994-95 transmissions or cases into 1996-97 vehicle that originally had case mounted shifter brackets. Additionally, if a late case has damaged or broken top mount bosses, the Sonnax bracket can be used as an alternative to correctly mount the shifter cable and allow reuse of the case.
