Line rise control in the AODE/4R70W is different than in most units. Forward pressure is controlled by EPC oil reacting directly on the spring end of the PR valve. The OE boost assembly only increases pressure in reverse. Traditional use of a larger ratio boost valve to increase line pressure has not been an option for this unit. Sonnax has created a specially designed boost assembly that introduces a supplemental boost valve to augment line rise in forward ranges. Like other Sonnax line pressure booster kits, this special boost valve adds EPC reaction area, providing higher pressure incrementally and when it is needed the most. Combined with a spring that is approximately 10% stronger than OE and more conservative in impact than other aftermarket kit springs, this unique Sonnax booster kit gives you the best of both worlds: a modest pressure increase at the low end, with a high-end pressure that is equal to or greater than that of other aftermarket kit springs.

In vehicles with an AOD transmission, the direct drum splines can wear, causing the direct drumshaft to contact the output shaft and shut off lube flow. The late shaft design allows the Sonnax retaining ring 76811-01K to fit into the OE groove. The early shaft design requires a groove to be machined to accept the retaining ring. The shaft has been depth hardened sufficiently from OE to ensure strength after machining.
- Late-model shaft requires no modifications. Early-style shafts will require machining a ring groove.

The solenoid regulator valve ensures that the solenoids are not flooded with more pressure than they can exhaust. When the regulator valve sticks, the pressure becomes too high and the unit may exhibit wrong gear starts. A more common problem is wear in the solenoid regulator bore, causing working pressure to be too low. Low solenoid pressure results in no 2nd, no 3rd or a shift to neutral on a 3-4, 4-3 shift. Sonnax solenoid regulator valve kit 76948-14K prevents both sticking and leaking. Sonnax bore sizing tool 76948-BST2 is required to fit this valve to a closer tolerance.

Common problems with a 4R70W are a burned overdrive band, loss of 4th gear, and/or a 4-3-neutral shift pattern. These problems can be caused by wear at the inside diameter of the overdrive servo regulator boost valve sleeve, due to constant oscillation. The hardened steel TV control valve and the throttle valve plunger continuously reciprocate within the aluminum valve body, wearing the valve body bore. This wear allows throttle valve feed oil to leak past the plunger and exhaust, and line feed oil to leak past the TV control valve and exhaust, resulting in poor line rise. Valves can stick on ridges worn into the valve body, resulting in uncontrollable throttle pressure. The AOD often has a long slide shift into second gear, intermediate clutch overheat, and/or direct clutch failure. In many instances the culprit is a worn 1-2 capacity modulator bore. The second clutch oil will leak past the outer balance spool and exhaust, creating insufficient clutch pressure. This can be seen on a gauge or valve body test machine as low 2nd clutch pressure that does not stabilize and fill completely until the road speed allows a shift to 3rd gear. This results in 2nd gear slide and burned intermediate or direct clutches. Sonnax offers an oversized 1-2 capacity modulator valve 76991-01K that restores the hydraulic integrity of the circuit.

Forward clutch failure and overdrive band failure can be the result of servo-pin-to-case-bore clearance. This excessive clearance allows leakage of release oil, which is forward clutch oil. This leakage reduces forward oil pressure and can allow overdrive band drag in first, second and third gears. Replace the OE servo pin with Sonnax 76833.

In AODE transmissions, common problems are intermediate roller clutch, overdrive band or forward clutch failure, traced to the O.D. servo pin wearing the case bore. The oil circuit which releases or holds the servo off is present as forward clutch oil in 1, 2, 3 ranges. If this release oil leaks through the case, it can cause the O.D. band to drag and/or forward clutches to overheat. If band overheating becomes extensive, it may not hold in 4th gear, which can allow a neutral condition and excessive roller RPM on a re-engagement of 4-2 downshift. Replace the OE servo pin with Sonnax 76833E.

Failure of the intermediate stub shaft and direct drum are almost inevitable when listed Ford transmissions are pushed to the limit. To maximize durability and improve clutch capacity in heavy-duty/performance vehicles, Sonnax offers Smart-Tech direct clutch drum and shaft kit 76656-01K, the first upgrade to eliminate every critical weakness.
Most failures in these units occur where the direct drum and stub shaft connect. Even other aftermarket upgrades that rely on a heavy-duty shaft will sheer in this area under extreme conditions. Unlike those two-piece assemblies, the all-in-one Smart-Tech easily handles the highest horsepower/torque levels. The entire piece is precision machined from high-strength steel to guarantee there are no splines to strip from the drum or weaken the shaft, and the shaft itself is significantly thicker and stronger than the OE. Due to its larger diameter, the integrated shaft must be used with the kit’s custom, heavy-duty sun gear.
Insufficient holding power is another area AODE/4R70-series transmissions fall short, but installing thinner aftermarket steels and backing plates to increase clutch capacity isn’t ideal. Those components increase clutch pack flex and heat build-up, making them the primary cause of repeat burn-up. To improve both performance and long-term reliability, the Smart-Tech’s custom drum and piston hold an OE backing plate and seven OE frictions for 17% more clutch capacity than the six-friction stack-up.
