Solenoid switch valve plugs in listed Chrysler transmissions cause bore wear as they oscillate and stroke during operation. This wear allows pressure loss and cross-leakage, and often permits the plugs to cock and hang up in the bore. This can result in failsafe mode, various codes, bind-ups, and burnt 4th or overdrive clutches. In 41 and 42 series units, TCC concerns can result, including engine stalling due to improper lockup. Installing patented Sonnax solenoid switch valve plug kit 92835-02K restores normal operation and control to this circuit.

Sonnax oversized pressure regulator valve 92835-29 addresses high/low line pressure, harsh shifts, erratic TCC apply pressures and poor lube control in 41TE(S), 42RLE units. Wear is commonly found at different areas in the pressure regulator bore. Wear at the inner bore causes high line pressure, harsh shifting and erratic converter apply pressure.
Wear at the spring end of the bore allows line pressure to exhaust, resulting in low line pressure, soft shifts and burnt clutches. Wear at this area also will affect converter flow and the lube circuit. The Sonnax valve restores valve-to-bore clearances, allowing the pressure regulator valve to maintain correct pressures in all ranges.

1994-1997 units with internal bypass.
Chrysler 41TE units ('94 to '97 with internal bypass valve) include a bypass valve in the transmission case. The intent of the bypass valve is to re-route ATF flow from the cooler to the lube circuit if (and only if) there is a blockage in the cooler. Often, the OE bypass becomes stuck in the open position due to wear or contamination. With the bypass valve constantly open, much of the ATF does not pass through the cooler. This can lead to overheating. Also, with the bypass valve stuck open, fluid pressure is relieved from the system. If the pump volume cannot replace the relieved pressure, then system pressure will remain low and lead to converter clutch slippage.
- Cooler flow can be restored without removing unit from vehicle
NOTE: Previous Sonnax instructions indicated that the 92836-01K could be used in 42LE applications. It has come to our attention that many (especially late model) 42LE cases were not drilled consistently and will not accept the bypass plug.
OE bypass valve does not have to be removed to install Sonnax bypass plug.

The shuttle plugs are prone to create bore wear and complaints and associated codes. The purpose of the solenoid switch valve and the two independent shuttle plugs is to allow one single PWM type solenoid that is designated “Low Reverse-Converter Clutch” to perform two separate functions. When the solenoid switch valve is latched in its outboard position, the LR/CC solenoid controls the oil flow to the low and reverse brake for 1st gear. On the other hand, when the solenoid switch valve is latched in the inboard position which is 2nd gear and all ranges beyond the LR/CC solenoid now controls the converter clutch. The first complaint occurs when contamination is present. This often causes the valve to stick in its bore resulting in limp-in mode and is accompanied by code P1776. Limp-in mode is 2nd starts with no upshift on the four speed models. Alternatively, a 1-4 shift strategy is limp-in mode on the rear wheel drive six speed models. Overdrive clutch failure and P0871: The second complaint with this switch valve and shuttle plug assembly is not as evident. It is the dreaded overdrive clutch pack failure that is accompanied by the trouble code P0871. The solenoid switch valve itself only strokes one time between 1st and 2nd gear. It’s in the outboard position for 1st gear and then strokes to the inboard position for the remaining forward gears. The two shuttle plugs that share one portion of the bore with the solenoid switch valve (larger end) is where the activity and wear is happening once the transmission has shifted into 2nd gear. Consequently, the shuttle plugs will wear out their independent area of the bore where they ride while the switch valve area of the bore remains in good condition. When driving in 1st or 3rd gear, oil pressure goes between the solenoid switch valve and the most inboard shuttle-plug to keep the switch valve latched in its inboard position. However, with a compromised bore, pressure can cross leak around the inboard plug and into the overdrive clutch oil circuit, partially applying the OD clutch pack when it should be fully released. The consequences of this leak around the shuttle plug is the OD clutch will be dragging ON, which eventually leads to OD clutch friction plate failure. This leak will feed enough pressure to the OD circuit to close the OD pressure switch which should remain open until the OD clutch is commanded to apply. The purpose of the solenoid switch valve and the two independent shuttle plugs is to allow one single PWM type solenoid that is designated “Low Reverse-Converter Clutch” to perform two separate functions. When the solenoid switch valve is latched in its outboard position, the LR/CC solenoid controls the oil flow to the low and reverse brake for 1st gear. On the other hand, when the solenoid switch valve is latched in the inboard position which is 2nd gear and all ranges beyond the LR/CC solenoid now controls the converter clutch. The first complaint occurs when contamination is present. This often causes the valve to stick in its bore resulting in limp-in mode and is accompanied by code P1776. Limp-in mode is 2nd starts with no upshift on the four speed models. Alternatively, a 1-4 shift strategy is limp-in mode on the rear wheel drive six speed models. Overdrive clutch failure and P0871: The second complaint with this switch valve and shuttle plug assembly is not as evident. The OE bushing is machined in place, allowing a wide tolerance on pump housing bore diameters.
Bore diameters can vary by more than .003". This wide tolerance is a problem when using standard replacement bushings. Standard replacement bushings will often have .008" or more hub-to-bushing clearance with an average 10 times more oil loss than the Sonnax improved fit bushing.
The Sonnax improved fit pump bushing 12502-01 will restore the clearance necessary for proper operation. The Sonnax bushings should be used when the housing diameter is greater than 1.6175", which will be in most cases.
