The OE accumulator pistons have two seal rings. The seal groove at the open end of the piston is a larger diameter, with the seal ring acting as a guide to prevent piston-to-bore contact.The seal groove at the closed end of the piston is a smaller diameter and the seal ring acts as a conventional seal. However, due to the smaller seal groove diameter, the piston will contact the bore when side-loaded resulting in scuffing, wear and leakage of clutch apply pressure.Sonnax accumulator piston kit 44894-01K features two guide seal rings, one at each end of the piston to prevent piston-to-bore scuffing when side loaded. - Regulator Valve Part No. 44912-17K Vehicles equipped with Chrysler 45RFE, 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE and 68RFE transmissions can develop low cooler flow at idle and/or overheated fluid issues after performing aftermarket re-programming or 'tuning' the PCM/TCM for heavy duty use. Aftermarket programming typically commands a minimum of 100 psi at idle. When the pressure regulator valve is in this position the valve can restrict the connection to the converter circuits, resulting in low cooler flow, fluid overheating and converter crowding that can cause engine stall at idle. Installing the Sonnax drop-in lube regulated pressure regulator valve 44912-17K restores the fluid connection to the converter circuit at idle, which is especially important on tuned vehicles. This valve has an internal check valve that ensures proper converter and lube oil flow under extreme 'tuned' operating conditions, eliminating the fluid overheat and converter related engine stalls at idle. This check valve reseats properly to seal the converter at engine off, eliminating the delayed engagements and converter drainback issues that arise from the outdated technique of drilling a hole in the casting wall between line and lube circuits. - The 4C return spring retaining ring in Chrysler 45RFE, 545RFE, 65RFE, 66RFE and 68RFE transmissions is known to come unseated and pop off, resulting in transmission failure. To repair and prevent this problem, plus more easily tune 4C performance, Sonnax offers 4C retaining ring and shim kit 72978-01K with three essential parts for a reliable build. The custom G-Loc ring in the Sonnax kit mechanically holds the OE retaining ring in place to prevent it from popping out. The kit’s .078" thick clutch backing plate retaining ring makes it easier to achieve the 4C clearance specification of .030 to .055". Setting this clearance is difficult when OE selective backing plate retaining rings are not readily available. As a result, some builders use thinner steel plates, but this undermines the clutch pack’s ability to dissipate heat. The ring in the Sonnax kit is .010 " thinner than the ring most units have from the factory, allowing for more choices when setting clutch clearance. The spring pack shim in the kit gives the option slightly tune the 4C clutch to release more quickly. Combining the shim with the thinner backing plate retaining ring and setting clearance closer to the high end of spec will preload the return spring for increased force. The result is improved 4C to OD shift timing when more aggressive, quicker-applying OD clutch packs are used. There is minimal valve-to-bore sealing at the line pressure to converter feed circuit, which allows critical apply fluid to leak past the valve spool and directly to exhaust/sump. Typical cores show low vacuum at this critical TCC apply circuit and confirms the issue of poor valve to bore sealing.

Chrysler RFE transmissions have a unique, full range pressure transducer and real-time adaptive closed-loop pressure control system. Because of this, it is not possible to raise pressure in an RFE the same way you would in other transmissions.
The typical method of installing a stronger pressure regulator spring or larger boost valve will not work because the RFE control module will simply adapt and return pressure to OE specification. An electrical booster option is the only way to raise pressure on an RFE. Sonnax line pressure booster kit RFE-LB1 is an improved design over a simple resistor circuit.
Featuring an integrated chip (IC) circuit and a stronger pressure regulator spring, this new kit delivers 10 psi increase at lower pressure range and 25 psi increase at higher pressure ranges. Only Sonnax line pressure booster kits provide progressive pressure increase which gives you smooth engagements and lower load on the pump at idle, but a greater increase in pressure as the transmission is worked harder.

The OE thermal bypass valve in listed units is known to get stuck in recirculation mode, only allowing fluid to circulate in the transmission and not allowing flow through the cooler. Sonnax thermal bypass eliminator kit 72760-01K allows reuse of the OE cooler block with the built-in pressure relief by removing the old OE thermal bypass valve and replacing it with a plug that permanently allows flow through the cooler.

The OE thermal bypass valve in listed transmissions is known to get stuck in recirculation mode, only allowing ATF to circulate in the transmission and not allowing flow through the cooler. As the vehicle gets up to operating temperature, this can result in transmission overheat. Sonnax thermal bypass eliminator kit 72760-02K allows reuse of the OE cooler bypass valve by removing the OE thermal bypass valve and replacing it with a valve assembly that permanently allows flow through the cooler to prevent transmission overheat. The Sonnax design includes a pressure bypass feature that allows for bypass if the cooler is blocked, also preventing transmission failure.
