Vehicles with a 5L40-E transmission are prone to poor line rise or high reverse pressure problems causing poor shift quality and clutch failure due to leakage at the boost valve assembly. Sonnax offers two replacement boost assemblies: the 55209-01K large ratio (higher line rise and firmer shifts) and the OE ratio 55209-04K for factory performance.
Symptoms: - Flare shifts
- Gear ratio codes
- High line pressure in Reverse
- Low line rise
- TCC slip
Cause:
The boost sleeve increases line pressure for shift quality, engagement and proper TCC apply. As the sleeve wears, torque signal oil will leak to exhaust and line pressure will not increase as commanded.
Correction:
These Sonnax kits restore proper clearance with upgraded design and material to prevent EPC and reverse boost loss. Large and OE ratio kits are available.

• Sleeve• Valve• Retaining Clips (2)• Spring• Solenoid ProtectorWhen the TCC PWM solenoid is energized and TCC signal fluid pressure is present, it strokes the TCC regulator valve and regulates line pressure into the converter clutch apply passage. Due to the pulse width modulation of the solenoid, the regulator valve is continuously oscillating. Excessive wear at the large spool diameter can prevent proper valve movement, causing no TCC, slips or soft apply. Excessive wear at the balance end of the bore can lead to harsh apply. Additionally, the OE valve stops against the TCC PWM solenoid screen, resulting in damage or breakage. Debris from the broken screen can lodge at the reverse lockout valve, resulting in no reverse. The Sonnax TCC regulator valve and sleeve kit includes a highly wear-resistant sleeve, modified valve and spring to restore proper converter clutch apply pressure. A solenoid protector is also included to eliminate damage to the solenoid screen. The valve bore must be reamed to accommodate the sleeve. Symptoms: • Harsh TCC apply• No lockup• No Reverse• Overheated converter• Soft TCC apply• TCC slipCause: Wear at the TCC regulator valve bore reduces apply pressure or TCC solenoid is damaged from valve contact.
Correction:
This kit includes a wear-resistant sleeve, modified valve and spring to re-establish proper apply pressure to the torque converter clutch, and prevents damage to the TCC PWM solenoid.

A stuck or worn safety mode valve in the 5L40-E, 5L50-E can result in the L/R clutch staying applied on a 1-2 upshift, causing a 1-2 bind-up condition. Wear at the 3-4 or 4-5 shift control valves allows signal and apply oil pressure to exhaust, preventing proper valve movement that causes flares, shift complaints and clutch distress. Sonnax has developed an oversized valve and control valve kit that, when installed in a refurbished bore, restores the necessary hydraulic clearances required for proper valve function. This kit 55211-14K can be used in the 3-4 and 4-5 shift valve bores as well as the safety mode valve location.

Cause:
Valve bore wear results in loss of apply oil, sluggish valve movement and sticking valves causing shift complaints and clutch distress.
Correction:
Install the Sonnax oversized valve kit that fits in any of the three locations (3-4 and 4-5 shift valve, safety mode valve) after refurbishing the bore to eliminate bore wear and sticking valves.
NOTE: This kit can be used in any of three locations. If using in the safety mode valve location, the control (small) valve is not used.

Oversized Low Pressure Control Valve Kit
• Valve• PlugThe low pressure control valve applies in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear coast conditions, when engine braking is needed. Depending on the gear and solenoid states, 1-2-3 regulated fluid pressure is routed through this valve to provide engine braking through a controlled apply of the low/reverse clutch, 2nd coast clutch or O.D. clutch.
If the bore has excessive wear, this regulated oil pressure is open to exhaust, resulting in 3-2-1 bumps on coast downshifts, no engine braking, and/or clutch failure.
The Sonnax low pressure control valve kit 55211-17K easily can be installed into are furbished bore, and incorporates design upgrades to prevent future wear concerns.

• For OE valves with .437" dia. balance spool, use 55211-04KGM 5L40-E and 5L50-E units can exhibit a number of TCC apply issues caused by bore wear at the TCC regulator valve.
Slipping or no TCC apply, fluid overheat, and soft or harsh apply are common results of this wear. Additionally, the OE valve repeatedly impacts against TCC solenoid screen, damaging or breaking screen.
Resulting screen debris can lodge at the reverse lockout valve, preventing Reverse operation. Sonnax TCC regulator valve kit 55211-24K includes a solenoid protector and allows the bore to be reconditioned to restore normal TCC and Reverse operation.

There are two additional bushings for the planetary gear that are included in a separate kit, part # 98502. The reason for this is that we have found most people are not replacing the inner planetary bushing because of the difficulty in doing so. Rather than having "extra" bushings left over we've left them out.
